Annapurna Circuit

IMG_9012.JPG

The Annapurna massif cleaves the thin air of Nepal. The trek around this mountain range combines impressive vistas with the mysterious culture of the local inhabitants. Therefore, the hike around the Annapurna Circuit should not be missing from the avid trekker's list. The contrast between the fertile land on the east side of the Thorung La Pass (5400 meters) and the dry 'Tibetan' grounds on the west side makes this group trip unforgettable. Beautiful trail!

Day 1 (Arrival in Nepal)

Arrival in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. A taxi will be waiting for you at the airport to take you to the hotel.

Day 2 (Kathmandu)

Getting to know Kathmandu. We will go on an excursion to several temples and walk through the busy streets of Thamel, the tourist district of Nepal.

Day 3 (Kathmandu-Bhulbhulbe)

From the capital of Nepal, we take a jeep to Bhulbhulbe. The drive initially takes us on the busiest highway in the country, but we soon reach the foothills that mark the beginning of the Annapurna trek. We spend the first night at an altitude of 900 meters.

Day 4 (Bhulbhulbe-Shange)

The trek begins with an intense climb to the charming village of Bahundanda. Here, we see the majestic foothills of the Annapurna massif for the first time. We then descend towards the Marsyangdi River, which we follow to the village of Shange (1100 meters).

Day 5 (Shange-Tal)

Today, the landscape starts to change dramatically. After crossing a bridge over the river, we enter a valley dominated by waterfalls. We sleep in Tal (1700 meters), located in a wide valley.

Day 6 (Tal-Chame)

We slowly climb towards Darapani. In this town, the routes of the Annapurna Circuit and the Manaslu Circuit intersect. The rugged, rocky path climbs to Tyanja, through the forest near the river. We then reach Chame (2600 meters), the capital of the Manang district.

Day 7 (Chame-Pisang)

Two long suspension bridges mark the beginning of this day. We gain considerable altitude again as we arrive in Pisang, a village on a steep mountainside, reaching 3300 meters.

Day 8 (Pisang-Manang)

The climate becomes much drier now, as this part of the trek is less affected by the annual monsoon that sweeps across Nepal. We choose to walk along the northern bank of the river. This route is a bit more challenging than the southern bank, but we are rewarded with the most beautiful views. We sleep in Manang at 3500 meters.

Day 9 (Rest Day in Manang)

We use this day to rest and acclimatize to the thin air at about 3500 meters. We can choose to take a trip to an ice lake at 4000 meters or just relax.

Day 10 (Manang-Ledar)

Today, we reach the tree line. We approach the Thorung La Pass. We no longer follow the river, but turn towards Ledar where yaks graze contentedly. We sleep at 4300 meters.

Day 11 (Ledar-High Camp)

Today is a short day: we reach High Camp fairly quickly, the base for the Thorung La Pass. We spend the night at 4600 meters, the highest sleeping spot of the trip.

Day 12 (High Camp-Muktinath)

Early in the morning, we start the climb to the pass. The route to Thorung La (5400 meters) is not technical, but can be challenging due to the thin air. At the pass, we reach the literal high point of the trip. The vistas here are truly breathtaking. We descend to Muktinath, which lies on the dry side of the massif. Trekkers here get a glimpse of what Tibet looks like.

Day 13 (Muktinath-Tatopani)

We take the jeep to Tatopani (1200 meters).

Day 14 (Tatopani-Ghorepani)

We climb steeply from Tatopani towards Ghorepani (2800 meters) to reach Poon Hill. Poon Hill is the best viewpoint for both Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. We can also choose to reach Poon Hill the next day at sunrise.

Days 15 and 16 (Ghorepani-Nayapul-Pokhara)

After Poon Hill, there is a long descent which is tough on the knees but satisfying. We reach the endpoint Nayapul and take the bus back to Kathmandu. Trekkers can also choose to stay a few days in Pokhara.

Day 17 (Kathmandu)

Enjoying the success of a completed trek and preparing for the return journey.

Difficulty

The trek around Annapurna is manageable for the experienced hiker. You should enjoy being active for 4 to 8 hours daily. In total, you will walk about 180 kilometers during this trek. You will do this with a light backpack (the rest will be carried by local porters). What makes this trek slightly more challenging compared to, for instance, a hike in the Alps, is the thin air. Each participant reacts differently to it. Therefore, we do not rush anything, and there is ample opportunity for each individual to acclimate at their own pace.
