Manaslu Circuit

DSC07275.JPG

The trek around the 8156-meter-high Manaslu in Nepal is impressive. The combination of beautiful villages, an overwhelming view, and a pass crossing above 5000 meters makes this journey unforgettable. The hike is relatively new in Nepal, so the local trails are less crowded compared to, for example, the route to the base camp of Mount Everest. The Manaslu Circuit is one of the gems of Nepal. An absolute highlight in our program.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1 (Arrival in Nepal)

Arrival in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. A taxi will be waiting at the airport to take you to the hotel.

Day 2 (Kathmandu)

Introduction to Kathmandu. We will take a tour of several temples and walk through the busy streets of Thamel, the tourist district of Nepal.

Day 3 (Kathmandu-Machhakhola)

From the capital of Nepal, we take a jeep to Machhakhola. The ride initially takes us along the busiest highway in the country, but we soon reach the foothills that mark the beginning of the trek around Manaslu. We spend the first night at 1000 meters altitude.

Day 4 (Machhakhola-Jagat)

Today we walk through a deep gorge towards Jagat (1400 meters). The views upwards are particularly impressive. We also pass through the village of Tatopani, where warm water flows directly from the ground.

Day 5 (Jagat-Deng)

We first descend towards the riverbanks and cross the river. Then we ascend towards several villages characterized by their terraces. Here we can also catch our first glimpse of mountains higher than 7000 meters. We sleep at 1900 meters altitude.

Day 6 (Deng-Namrung)

The thin air starts to make a real difference now. We reach above 2000 meters for the first time. We ascend to Namrung, which is situated at almost 2600 meters.

Day 7 (Namrung-Lho)

Today's endpoint is the village of Lho. To reach it, we walk all day through an impressive landscape. We sleep above 3000 meters for the first time. The warm sleeping bag will be very useful here.

Day 8 (Lho-Samagaun)

We have a short day ahead as we head towards Samagaun. During this intense day, we reach the tree line. Today we see the characteristic peak of Manaslu for the first time. A rest day is scheduled after this.

Day 9 (Samagaun-Samagaun)

We use this day to rest and acclimatize to the thin air at approximately 3700 meters altitude. We can choose to take a trip towards the Manaslu base camp, where climbers prepare for the 8156-meter summit, or we can relax in the village.

Day 10 (Samagaun-Samdo)

Today, we take a leisurely walk to Samdo, which is at the same altitude as Samagaun. Upon arrival, there is an opportunity for the determined ones to climb to a point with a fantastic view of the Manaslu range.

Day 11 (Samdo-Larkya La Phedi)

We now trek to the base of the Larkya Pass, the starting point for crossing the famous pass at 4500 meters altitude. We will sleep in tents here. Tomorrow is the big day.

Day 12 (Larkya La Phedi-Bimtang)

The day starts early as we quickly have breakfast and prepare for a strenuous day. Today we climb to the Larkya Pass at 5100 meters altitude. The terrain is not technically difficult, but it is challenging due to the altitude. The pass is the literal highlight of this journey. After enjoying the view, we descend towards Bimtang at 3600 meters altitude. Along the way, we have fantastic views of the 8000-meter peaks Annapurna and Dhaulagiri.

Day 13 (Bimtang-Gowa)

We descend towards Gowa.

Day 14 and 15 (Gowa-Jagat-Ngadi)

Descent to Ngadi, the endpoint of the trek.

Day 16 and 17 (Kathmandu)

By bus to Kathmandu, with the return flight home the following day.

Difficulty

The trek around Manaslu is manageable for experienced hikers. You should enjoy being active for 4 to 8 hours a day. This is done with a light backpack (the rest is carried by local porters). What makes the trek slightly more challenging than, for example, a trek in the Alps, is the thin air. Each participant reacts differently to this. Therefore, we do not rush and allow ample opportunity for each individual to acclimatize at their own pace.

Facilities

  • You will be picked up from the airport in Kathmandu.

  • Before and after the trek, you will stay for three days in a hotel (including breakfast) in Kathmandu.

  • We arrange all permits and other documents.

  • This is a group tour with open registration. The group size is a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 15 people. This trip can also be booked as a custom tour for two or with your own group.

  • You will stay in local guesthouses with basic facilities during the trek.

  • Your luggage will be carried by local porters. You will only need to carry a daypack weighing a maximum of 5 kilos.

  • The quoted price excludes international flights and tips for local guides and porters. We recommend about €100 per guest for tips.
